Welcome to Sewciety Studio
What We Do
We are a modern sewing studio located in Claremont, California. Our goal is to celebrate our sewing and crafting heritage by teaching, supporting, and inspiring both experienced and novice sewists who share our love of textiles and handmade design.
Sewing is an acquired skill that takes time, practice, and above all, patience. At Sewciety Studio everything we do is individualized and scaled for small classes. Although the majority of our classes are designed for kids and teens, we also offer classes for adults and more advanced sewists who need minimal supervision beyond access to our studio and equipment to complete a special project. Classes designed for the adult sewist include: Machine Basics, Serger Basics, Quilting, and Open Studio.
Who We Are
When the two of us met several years ago it didn’t take us long to discover that we had much in common. Both of us had complimentary business backgrounds within the same industry. Yvonne Cervantes Coleman worked for over ten years in Costume Design in Theatre and Film and Dill-Cruz spent fifteen years working in Production of Broadcast Advertising. We both also shared a love of sewing and handmade crafts.
Being active volunteers at our neighborhood elementary school, our paths crossed frequently and it wasn’t long after we met that our activities converged around our love of sewing and our mutual desire to help raise money for our community elementary school. Together with other like-minded moms with a skill for sewing, we formed a weekly sewing circle and teamed up to stitch together items that could be donated to our school’s annual fundraiser event. Over the years we have collectively raised over $4,000 for our school.
A few years ago, we developed kid’s beginner and intermediate sewing classes as part of the elementary after-school enrichment program. The classes were so well received we decided to expand on this experience to offer a more diverse series of classes and Yvonne Coleman began offering sewing classes through CUSD’s Summer Slice program along with local sewist and friend, Stephanie Stanger.
We both love teaching kids and teens to sew and are amazed at how easily this age group is able to master the basics of machine sewing and thus unleash the creative designer within. As a way to encourage creativity, we seek to instill in our young students the values of reusing, repurposing, and preserving. Many of our students have taken these skills well beyond just the basics. The success of these sewing classes was the impetus we needed to launch Sewciety Studio.
We are excited to get started and invite you to join us . . . let's dream, create, and have fun!
